Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer claims the lives of people everyday. It is a disease that can occur at any age, whether or not you have a family history, drink alcohol or smoke, although these factors increase the likelihood that you could develop cancer. There are certain types of cancer in the mouth that are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus, which causes cervical cancer, and is relatively common. Just like you have annual Pap Smears if you are a woman, and prostate screenings for men, everyone should have visual oral cancer screenings minimally every year, and Vizilite or similar screenings every two years.
Oral cancer is serious. General dentists, like Dr. Angela Hilton-Foley, are in a position where they can screen their patients with various tests, such as Vizilite, or Oral CDx, along with semi-annual visual screenings at your 6 month checkups. At Designing Smiles we believe that many of these cases can be prevented by screening for oral cancer, in their earliest, treatable stages. We recommend having the Vizilite test every two years. It takes only a few minutes. Anyone who uses chewing tobacco or who has a history of smoking, or is currently smoking should have this test done annually, along with visual inspection of the mouth. Please ask us about this very important test, and if you have any loved ones that you are concerned about, please let us know. We'd be happy to do a screening to evaluate their mouth.
